. This two-volume set is a mushroom-foraging expedition in book form that draws together Cage’s toadstool-themed compositions, photographs, illustrations and ephemera. Volume I features Cage’s musings on the connections between mushrooms and music; an essay from Kingston Trinder on Cage’s longstanding interest in mushrooms; and a reproduction of Mushrooms et Variationes, a piece written and originally performed by Cage in 1983. Interspersed throughout this text, you’ll also find diary excerpts, Cage’s mycological-oriented Indeterminacy stories and photographs of Cage on the hunt for mushrooms, as well as snapshots and field books from his personal collection. Volume II presents the inaugural reproduction of Cage’s 1972 portfolio, Mushroom Book, created in collaboration with illustrator Lois Long and botanist Alexander H. Smith.
